The Governator’s Response

Posted on January 29th, 2008 in Joy of Zen by joyofzen

Thank you for writing Governor Schwarzenegger and sharing your thoughts on the budget crisis’ impact on the California State Park system. The Governor appreciates your input during this difficult budget year.

A weakened national economy and auto-pilot state spending has created a projected budget shortfall of $14.5 billion for fiscal year 2008-09. Although state government revenues this coming year are actually forecast to hold steady, the problem is that every year automatic spending formulas increase expenditures. Left unchecked, next year’s budget would need to grow by 7.3-percent, which is $7.6 billion; even booming economies can’t meet that kind of increase. To immediately combat this crisis, the Governor has proposed a 10-percent reduction in nearly every General Fund program from their projected 2008-09 funding levels. While these reductions are unquestionably painful and challenging, this across-the-board approach is designed to protect essential services by spreading reductions as evenly as possible.

To achieve this difficult reduction, State Parks will be reducing both its permanent and seasonal workforce. As a result, 48 park units will be closed or partially closed to the public and placed in caretaker status. By closing parks and eliminating positions, remaining resources can be consolidated and shifted to other parks to provide for services necessary to keep those parks open and operating. While 48 parks are affected by closures, 230 parks-or 83% of the system-will remain open.

We must reform our state budget process. Government cannot continue to put people through the binge and purge of our budget process that has now led to park closures. That’s why the Governor has proposed a Budget Stabilization Act. Under the Governor’s plan, when revenues grow, Sacramento would not be able to spend all the money. Instead, we would set a portion aside in a Revenue Stabilization Fund to stabilize the budget in down years. If a deficit develops during the year, instead of waiting to accumulate billions of dollars of debt, the Governor’s plan would automatically trigger lower funding levels already agreed upon by the Legislature. Had this system been in place the past decade, we would not be facing a $14.5 billion deficit.

As Governor Schwarzenegger works with his partners in the Legislature, he will keep your concerns in mind. With your help, we will turn today’s temporary problem into a permanent victory for the people of California.

Sincerely,

Jared Bocka
Office of Constituent Affairs

State Parks, Who Needs ‘Em!?

Posted on January 24th, 2008 in Joy of Zen by joyofzen
The governor wants to close Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve, Montana de Oro State Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park (which just finished a $5 million restoration!) and 45 other state parks throughout California.

What could he possibly be thinking? To tell you the truth, I have no idea. But one thing I do know: We have to nip this bad idea in the bud. If you want to join me in saying no to closing state parks, click here:

In a move that has stunned nature-lovers across the state, Gov. Schwarzenegger’s latest budget proposal would shut down 20 percent of the state’s parks, as well as cut down on lifeguards at state beaches. Of course, we all know California needs to balance the budget. But we’re talking about a step that would save $9 million – less than 0.1 percent of the state budget. Meanwhile, the costs to our environment, our quality of life, and our confidence in state government would be incalculable.

Let’s kill this idea before it gets any further. Click here to tell the governor to back off of this wrong-headed move. And please, forward this e-mail to your family and friends. We need the governor to hear from as many people as possible.

I got bored with my blog so I changed a couple of things. I added “going green” because it’s the cool thing to do right now. Everyone and everything is going green, and is organic. There is a sign at school that says Student Health Center Going Green! It’s all so stupid. And since I chose a green for the new background color, I thought hey, why not be in with the rest of them and put that! So there you have it. We’ll see how long I’ll be amused by it :)

I don’t think I ever said it turned out I didn’t have strep. I’m not sure why that one day it felt like I was swallowing big sewing needles, but at least it didn’t last longer. I am still sick though. This cough won’t stop, it’s more annoying than anything else. And I’m still having a bit of sinus problems, but other than that I feel fine, which is what makes the cough so stupid.

Send some good vibes my way this week! About nothing in particular, just general good vibes :) I’ve been on the computer for far too long tonight, it’s almost 11 *sigh* I did a good chunk of homework this weekend, but I still have more. It’s never-ending. But that’s what school is for I s’pose.

I think I have strep throat. I’m so thrilled. I had it last January, but with the flu since I didn’t get a flu shot. I don’t have the flu thankfully, but I’ve been sick a few days and tried for weeks not to get sick from Jason. He does have something different, but we are both BLAH. My voice got worse and worse as the day went on, now I can barely talk. And my throat is stabbing me cuz it feels like it.

Side note: I’m talking to Tony Baloney Balloon… cuz I’ll probably forget to tell you later.

Hit and Run in Glendale on January 4th

Posted on January 11th, 2008 in Joy of Zen by joyofzen
Jason’s friend (who is smaller than me) and her boss were hit by a black Range Rover on this date as they walked in a crosswalk at the intersection of Glenoaks Blvd. and Louise St. The coward drove off and left them there. A witness called 911 but did not see the plate on the vehicle which had come flying around the corner. The driver hit two people and didn’t even stop.

Thankfully they are both alive; she is especially lucky to be alive with how small she is. Her skull cracked open and she now has some giant staples in her head. Her boss I believe has a broken leg. So if anyone out there knows anything about this please call the Glendale Police Department where a report has already been made.

This stupid asshole needs to be held accountable for his actions.
