My friend across the pond said she ate a fry up today and I asked her what that was. She sent me this picture:

There is your English lesson for the day ;)

I Heart Dave Barry

Catherine turned me onto him a while back and she gave me his review of 07 to check out. I’ll paste some favorites below:

In short, 2007 was a year of deep gloom, pierced occasionally by rays of even deeper gloom.

..other than that, 2007 was a disaster. American consumers came to fear products manufactured in China, which covers pretty much everything in the typical American home except the dirt.

In other February action, Democrats in the House of Representatives, after a large amount of talking, pass a nonbinding resolution sternly ordering President Bush to get out of Iraq, unless of course he chooses not to.

. . . the broadcasting industry is shocked, shocked, when radio personality Don Imus, who has spent several decades making and chuckling at crude racist statements, makes a crude racist statement…

In other executive action, President Bush, on the eve of July Fourth, commutes ”Scooter” Libby’s prison sentence, on the grounds that, quote, ”Hey, c’mon, it’s Scooter.” Congressional Democrats are outraged, but the public is more concerned with the issue of whether to go ahead and have that fifth beer.

Okay I’d keep pasting more good stuff but I don’t want to put the whole post! You can go check it out on your own if you wanna. :)

The Problem with Presidential Primaries

Posted on December 21st, 2007 in Joy of Zen by joyofzen
Out of all the candidates I find that Dennis Kucinich would be the best for this country. I would love nothing more than to vote for him in the primary on February 5th, but I can’t. I can’t because I’m registered as Green Party and he’s running as a Democrat. If I was a ‘decline to state’ person, then I could go ahead and do it. I feel this is a big flaw in our system. Anyone should be able to vote for anyone else no matter what party they are. This is really frustrating.

Oh so busy. Helping MissTruly get her holiday orders out. It’s been crazy. Fun. But crazy.

from an email… Halliburton & Rape

Posted on December 15th, 2007 in Joy of Zen by joyofzen

Dear MoveOn member,

Jamie Leigh Jones was a 20-year-old woman working in Iraq for a subsidiary of Halliburton when she was drugged and brutally gang-raped by several co-workers.

The next day, Halliburton told her that if she left Iraq to get medical treatment, she could lose her job.1

Jamie’s story gets even more horrific: For the last two years, she’s been asking the US government to hold the perpetrators accountable. But the men who raped her may never be brought to justice because Halliburton and other contractors in Iraq aren’t subject to US or Iraqi laws. They can’t be tried for a crime in any court.2

This is one of the most disturbing stories we have come across in a while. We’re calling on Congress to investigate Jamie’s case, hold those involved accountable, and bring US contractors under the jurisdiction of US law so this can’t happen again. If hundreds of thousands of us speak out against this outrageous story, we can force Congress to take action.

Can you sign the petition? http://pol.moveon.org/contractors_accountable/?r_by=11809-7045

After you sign, please forward this email to friends, family and colleagues—we all need to speak out together.

When you get an email from us, it doesn’t usually include a graphic description of a brutal attack. But when we heard this story, we knew we had to do something about it.

Here’s how Jamie described what happened after the attack:

I awoke the next morning in the barracks to find my naked body battered and bruised. I was still groggy from whatever had been put in my drink. I was bleeding… After getting to the clinic and having a rape kit performed…I was locked in a container with no food, no way to call my parents, and was placed under armed guard by Halliburton.3

Jamie’s attackers aren’t the only ones exploiting a legal loophole to get away with their violent crimes. Another female employee of Halliburton says she was raped by her co-workers in Iraq.4 Employees of Blackwater, another private contracting firm in Iraq, were accused of killing innocent Iraqi civilians, and that incident turned into an international scandal. Worst of all, they may never be punished.5

Private contractors in Iraq are making massive amounts of money, operating above the law and are accountable to no one. This has to stop.

Congress needs to act now to bring these contractors under the rule of law. If they don’t, nothing will prevent a case like Jamie’s from happening again. No man or woman working in Iraq should have to fear that they can be attacked without consequences.

Please sign on to the petition: “Congress must investigate the rape of Jamie Leigh Jones and others, hold those involved accountable, and bring US contractors under the jurisdiction of US law.”

Thanks for all you do,

When I worked at my last job, Jolly worked for an insurance company that was a client of ours. She was an SIU there (special investigations unit) and she was the best. I knew that she was ill, but did not know what with. Today I got an email from my old job saying she passed away. Turns out she had a brain tumor. This article says she’d gone into remission after going through chemo but that a new tumor came in July. I haven’t found an obituary online yet, but this just happened yesterday.

When I was quitting my job I sent out an email to the clients letting them know. I kept Jolly’s email to me because I took it as such a compliment coming from her. I always worked hard to make her happy. Here it is:

JCOCHETT@……

Oh my gosh. The thought of you not being there is very disturbing to me. You are excellent at your job and you have kept on top of our diary system. I miss you already. If you ever need a reference, just ask… Good luck to you my friend.

Jolly

Jolly’s real name was Joy. I’d seen some mugs in Starbucks recently that said Jolly on them, I was thinking of buying one to send to her. It’s so sad, she was just too young to go now. In the picture above, she is on the left right, the article that posted it was wrong. Oh yeah and it says she was a pioneer on the US women’s soccer scene. It’s amazing the things you don’t know about people. She will be missed.

People keep coming to my blog and I keep not posting anything! Hi there. How’s it goin’? Weather nice? You cozy in your house? At an internet cafe? Cheers either way. I’m in my last week of hell for this quarter but it will be over mid-Saturday. Then I can make my mind numb with the 350 YouTube videos I’ve missed out on over the past couple months… and I’ll be making a video too… not sure when yet… maybe I’ll do a couple and post one on here, just for YOU! Wouldn’t you like that? I thought so. Talk to you later :D
